Adaptive Physical Education

Adapted Physical Education (APE) is physical education which has been adapted or modified to make the activities appropriate for a student with a disability when an IEP Team has determined that a regular education class is not adequate to meet the student’s needs. Adapted Physical Education focuses on the development of physical and motor skills, fundamental motor skills and patterns (throwing, catching, walking, running, etc), and fundamental skills in individual and group games and sports (including lifetime recreation activities). The APE teacher provides assessment to help an IEP determine if APE is required for a student, recommendations for adaptations and modifications within a regular PE setting, planning and implementation of APE services, adapted materials and equipment, and resources and consultation for school staff.
